Sunburn, Heat Exhaustion and Dehydration

Mauritius’ tropical climate is one of the reasons people travel here, but prolonged exposure to sunshine and heat can quickly become a health concern.

Sunburn can occur surprisingly quickly, particularly when spending time at the beach, swimming, sailing or participating in outdoor activities. Use appropriate sunscreen, reapply it regularly—particularly after swimming—and consider protective clothing, a hat and shade during periods of intense sunshine.

Heat exhaustion may cause heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea and fatigue. Dehydration can contribute to these symptoms and may also cause excessive thirst, dry mouth and reduced urination.

If symptoms develop, move into a cooler environment, rest and gradually replace fluids if you are able to drink safely. Avoid further strenuous activity or sun exposure until you have recovered.

More severe symptoms such as confusion, collapse, loss of consciousness, very high body temperature or significant deterioration require urgent medical attention, as they may indicate a serious heat-related illness.

A tropical holiday should be enjoyed, not endured. Regular hydration, sensible sun protection and recognising the early signs of heat-related illness can prevent a minor problem from becoming a medical emergency.
