Dengue Fever in Mauritius: Symptoms and Prevention

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in many tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Cases can occur in Mauritius, making mosquito-bite prevention an important part of protecting your health during your stay.

Symptoms can include fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, fatigue and rash. Symptoms vary between individuals, and not every fever experienced in Mauritius is dengue. A medical assessment may therefore be necessary to establish the likely cause of your illness.

Seek medical attention if you develop a significant or persistent fever during your stay, particularly if accompanied by pronounced weakness, pain, rash or other concerning symptoms. Urgent assessment is important if severe symptoms develop, including persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, breathing difficulties, confusion or marked deterioration.

Prevention remains one of the best forms of protection. Use an effective mosquito repellent, wear clothing that provides additional coverage where practical, and use screens or air-conditioned accommodation when available. Mosquitoes that transmit dengue can bite during the daytime, so protection should not be limited to evenings.

If you develop symptoms while in Mauritius, SOS Tourist Doctor can provide an initial medical assessment and advise whether testing or further examination is required.
