Not every medical concern requires an immediate trip to a clinic. In many situations, speaking to a doctor by video can provide an effective first medical assessment and help determine what should happen next.
Video consultations may be suitable for common non-emergency concerns such as mild respiratory symptoms, digestive complaints, allergies, certain skin conditions, headaches and general health concerns. They can also be useful when you need advice about medication or are unsure whether your symptoms warrant an in-person examination.
During the consultation, the doctor can discuss your symptoms, relevant medical history and current medication. Based on this assessment, you may receive medical advice, an appropriate prescription where permitted, or a recommendation for further care.
There are, however, limits to remote medicine. Some conditions require physical examination, diagnostic testing or direct observation that cannot safely be performed through a screen. If this is the case, the doctor will recommend an in-person assessment.
A video consultation should therefore not be viewed simply as a replacement for seeing a doctor. It is often a convenient *first point of medical contact*, helping you understand the safest and most appropriate next step.
